Water & Energy Conservation
The Sookie Goldman Nature Center, located in the Santa Monica Mountains of Los Angeles, is dedicated to introducing inner city school children to the natural environment of the chaparral and high-desert mountains of southern California. The Los Angeles Department of Water & Power sponsored one interactive bay of the nature center to help promote energy and water conservation, an important theme of the nature center. All exhibits were designed so that if you don't read you can still learn. Each exhibit however has a "What To Do" and a "What To Learn" graphics panel as a teachers' guide. Turning cranks, pushing buttons, raising and lowering levers actually make water move through the exhibits, or bubbles burst from nowhere or electrical appliances operate like magic. Hands-on fun becomes a playground of discovery.
